Nancy Zarenda is founder and director the Spanish Language Academy in Sacramento. Rio International Language Services was originally established in 1988 in Southern California in response to the demand for Spanish training for executives and law enforcement agencies. Spanish Language Academy now provides these services and more.
Ms. Zarenda has extensive experience in language training and education, which spans public schools, community colleges, police academies, and the private sector. She designed and implemented Spanish for Law Enforcement at the Rio Hondo Policy Academy in Whittier from 1996 - 2001. Ms. Zarenda has worked as an educational consultant for the California Department of Education, and received a two term gubernatorial appointment to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing from 1992 to 2001. She has worked as an international education consultant in Latin America and Spain, and with the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science.
Ms. Zarenda is co-vice chair of the California Utilities Diversity Council, and has worked on limited English proficient consumer issues for the California Public Utilities Commission. She is a California court certified interpreter and volunteer emergency linguist for the National Virtual Translation Center. As a member of the Peace Officers Standards and Training curriculum committees she helped develop training on Racial Profiling (SB1102) and Victims of Violence.
Ms. Zarenda is a member of the following organizations:

- National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators, advocacy committee and committee of credentials
- National Utilities Diversity Council, charter member
Ms. Zarenda has written articles for Language Magazine and Latino Journal on topics related to language and business, politics, national defense, and interpretation and translation. She was a trainer in Puebla and Cuernavaca, Mexico in November, 2006 addressing over 600 rural women on small business strategies and political involvement.
